Jacques Wirtz

Jacques Wirtz was a Belgium Landscape Architect. He became known for designs that complimented the natural surroundings, he was fond of clipped trees and hedges, flowering plants, grasses and water opposed to man-made materials. Some of his most significant projects were Jubilee Park, London Canary Wharf and Alnwick Castle walled garden, Northumberland.

One of Wirtz designs that caught my eye was his lakeside grounds transformation at the Crystalline private museum in Belgium. I find the planting in this design really quite captivating, the tall, uniform waving masses of Mithcanthus gracillimus sprout beautifully from the earth. Although this planting design is simple, it is incredibly mesmerising how the grass beds sway peacefully in the air. I can imagine moving through this space is emotive, with the Miscanthus gracillimus growing to an ultimate height of 1.7-2m they will hide other elements of the site making it exciting yet also peaceful.

Personally I enjoy lots of Wirtz's designs, despite the fact that they may not be biodiverse they stand out to me. He is able to create texture and movement amongst his planting contributing to the 'mood' of the design.
