A note of visual 'Richness'...

Visual Richness:

I found the session 6 reader; Chapter 6: Richness intriguing. Although it may seem obvious to most, I have never compared the richness of an object to one another. Seeing the timeline of shopping centre design from pre 1950s up until the 1980s the change in the richness of place in massive. Reading about visual richness, dependant on the presence of visual contrasts dependant on the two main factors; orientation of the surface concerned and the likely positions from which it will be viewed is something which is completely new to me.

Using contrast within my design to create richness is something I will be taking onboard in my design of North Place - making sure to consider scale, distances, views, and length of time during which each view will be experienced, looking at the views into the site from surrounding pavements roads and buildings (large-scale and small-scale).

‘Enriching places to take advantage of modern production techniques, accepting modern labour costs.’

o   Revealing construction and fixings.

o   Close-range richness using materials with inherent surface variety.

o   Think about ways to increase richness.

o   Re-use richness from the past.
