Ocean Front - LaGuardia Design Group

Situated in Sagaponack, New York; Oceanfront is a minimalist environment, located between Sagaponack potato field and oceanfront shoreline. The site was previously exposed to the threatening approach of the Atlantic Ocean, which motivated the the design to be a resistant environment.

The project involved relocating the house relocated around just over 120 metres further inland (to the middle of a flat cornfield), creating an open farmland and rolling sand dunes. The concept for the design involved a series of outcropping decks stepping down from the original structure, feathering into the landscape. The surrounding dunes were formed buy excavating earth on site, while building a pond in the process. Whilst the ponds convoluted shape only allowed portions of the pond to be viewed from any given perspective, creating the 'hidden shoreline', an illusion of the pond true size.

I have incredible appreciation for this landscape. Although the planting and design are straightforward the overall outcome is effortless. I can picture myself lying in the long grasses, listening to the waves crashing, the wind, the swaying grasses, birdsong - if I had to describe this landscape in one word I would choose peace. The sweeping fluffy grasses make you feel as though you are on an island cut off from the rest of the world, at peace.
