Park Pergola, Netherlands

Park Pergola located in Maximapark, Urecht, Netherlands was designed by West 8. It's situated in a residential neighbourhood of 35,000 homes in the west of Utrecht. The park itself was the product of a design competition held in 1997 that creates 'three 'edges' to separate the park from its suburban surroundings'. The pergola is composed of elevated honeycomb-elements, made out of 'durable concrete' and stretches 2.2 miles long and is 6m high. Surrounded by a 50-hectare secluded courtyard the pergola is designed to become a miniature eco-system, acting as a climbing frame for climbers, as well as ferns, miss and other vegetation, acting as nesting grounds for owls and bats and proving refuge for other animals and insects.

In my opinion the park interconnects a variety of people from the community having something to offer for everyone, the primary routes for cyclists, dog walkers, pedestrians and skaters and the tertiary areas devoted to ecology. The park also offers workshops for youngsters in the summer time and the community work holistically to help maintain the park, ensuring it flourishes. I believe introducing the park pergola into this environment has established harmony between humans and animals, its sleek, simple yet effective design is interchangeable which eases assembly. The pergola is clear part of what has made the park so successful.
