London Trip - Crossrail Place Roof Garden, Gillespies and Foster + Partners

Crossrail Place is a mixed-use scheme encompassing the over-ground elements of a new station, located in the north dock, adjacent to the HSBC tower at Canary Wharf. Prior to Crossrail Place Roof Garden was built, the area was the Import Dock (North Dock) of West India Docks, which had been used for shipping and commerce but fell into disuse in the 1960s and 1980s. Now public realm and commercial office spaces, entirely surrounded by the water of the West India Quay dock, the station sits 18 metres below sea level, with two levels and Crossrail Roof Garden above water. The following figure shows a cross section of the building and visualisations sketches and mid-construction images of the site. The elevated garden lies beneath an intricately designed ETFE lattice timber roof structure, created by Foster + Partners. One Hive by StudioPOD

Situated in India, Mumbai, One Hive was built in 2021 with the ambition of 'transforming neglected urban void into a thriving public space. This urban plaza within a commercial mixed-use campus has become a 'relaxing open space for lunch, informal meetings and campus events', the preservation of existing trees and plants on site was a one of the elements are the heart of the design. The concept for the space was to create a amphitheatre through the use of concrete modules. The site is V-shaped with geometric slabs made from stonecrete, a mixture of locally available natural stone and concrete, increasing durability and adding continuity. Simple concrete plinths serve as the base for the prefabricated concrete 'pods', which are made from recycled concrete aggregate which have been designed with LEED Platinum certification (the highest level of environmental sustainability for buildings). The 2024 Earthshot Prize Winner - Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS)

Previous solar energy company ATS have created a new technology like solar panels but for heat, with 60% of industrial heat wasted, there is a huge market for this technology to be used on steal plants for example. They have created a semi conductor material which is then made into smaller pellets, these bismuth telluride pellets works as the 'engine', hot on one side a cold on the other, electrons start to flow creating a current, allowing electricity to flow through the site. This creates a heat panel 'cartridge' (pictured below). Several of these 'cartridge' devices can be connected together in a linear series, boosting potential, ensuring the maximum amount of heat is utilised from the waste heat process.
